Dominican Republic
Hispanola
The Dominican Republic is a major tourist destination filled with beautiful beaches and resorts. With tourism as the country’s primary industry, rural areas are overlooked by the government. More than 42% of Dominicans live below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day. Half of the country does not have access to clean water and food. Social exclusion creates particular barriers for Dominicans of Haitian origin. Not only do they suffer from poverty and poor living conditions, about 20% of Dominicans lack the proper documentation to benefit from social assistance programs.
In spite of the poverty that the Dominican Republic faces, the hope of Christ is being made known. The two 25 Project ministry locations, Villa Laura and Batey Lecheria, give a place for orphaned and vulnerable children to hear the hope of the Gospel. Through sponsorships, children are given a place to belong, necessary nutrition, medical care, educational tools, and discipleship to provide a better future for themselves, their families, and ultimately their communities.
Sierra Leone
West Africa
Sierra Leone, though listed as one of the poorest countries in the world, is a resource-rich country in West Africa. A devastating civil war, the Ebola outbreak that took over 4000 lives, and an oppressive government have overshadowed the beauty and resources of Sierra Leone. More than 60% of Sierra Leoneans live below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day. As a result of the gripping poverty, there is widespread hunger, malnutrition, and disease.
Despite the devastation that Sierra Leone has endured, the hope of Christ is being made known. The 25 Project ministry provides a place for orphaned and vulnerable children to hear the hope of the Gospel. Through sponsorships, children are given a place to belong, necessary nutrition, medical care, educational tools, and discipleship to provide a better future for themselves, their families, and ultimately their communities.
Ethiopia
East Africa
Ethiopia is located in East Africa and has the second-largest population among all African countries. Approximately 78% of Ethiopians struggle to survive on an income of less than $2 per day. The nation has faced challenges such as civil wars, famine, drought, and the spread of diseases like leprosy. Ethiopia’s widespread poverty has resulted in nationwide hunger, malnutrition, and preventable diseases, all of which account for at least 60% of the country’s health problems. Despite facing significant challenges, Ethiopia possesses a rich culture and a long history worth celebrating.
Korah is a small village located in the southwestern part of Addis Ababa and was once known as a community for lepers. It is now known as the site of the city’s trash dump. Many villagers rely on scavenging through the waste in search of food for their families. They face significant struggles as they compete with crows and dogs for scraps and have no access to proper medical treatment.
South Africa
Eastern Cape
South Africa boasts breathtaking natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and a rich cultural history. Beneath it’s beauty, this nation bears the scars of its fragmented and tumultuous history with racial tensions, and one of the highest HIV rates in the world. Because of a lack of jobs and education in rural areas, many families suffer from poverty and despair.
In spite of the complexity of South Africa’s struggles, the hope of Christ is being made known. The 25 Project partners with Intlantsi Christian School to provide a place for orphaned and vulnerable children. Children receive a Christian education, necessary nutrition, medical care, and discipleship to provide a better future for themselves, their families, and ultimately their communities at Intlantsi.
SOuth Asia
South Asia is the second most-populous region in the world and a nation of rapid economic growth. It is also home to approximately 420 million people who live in poverty as well as 50,000 orphaned children. Widespread hunger, malnutrition, and disease are common throughout the nation.
In spite of the poverty in South Asia, the hope of Christ is being made known. The 25 Project partners with Mercy Homes, giving a place for orphaned and vulnerable children to hear the hope of the Gospel. Two residential homes house the boys and girls separately, along with the house parents. Through sponsorships, children are given a place to belong, necessary nutrition, medical care, educational tools, and discipleship to provide a better future for themselves, their families, and ultimately their communities.
MELISSA COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Texas, USA
While the 25 Project seeks to help children around the world, we also desire to engage and serve children in need in our local community. The Melissa Community Outreach (MCO)has provided an opportunity for the 25 Project to come alongside their organization to help give structure and support, as well as to expand their existing ministry to reach lower income children and families with discipleship opportunities.
We hope to not only meet the communities’ physical needs through the existing food pantry ministry, but also to provide family events, educational classes, and a youth program to help the community thrive as we share the hope of the Gospel of Christ. We are excited by the ways God has already used MCO, and we are eager to see all the ways He will further use this ministry to bless the community of Melissa in the coming days.
